UN TRIPTYQUE DE COURTES PIÈCES DE DAMIEN JALET EN COLLABORATION AVEC SIDI LARBI CHERKAOUI

[EN] At its performance at the Tokyo International Arts Festival in 2008, programme director Chiaki Soma called Damien Jalet's three spells "a new frontier and a new mode of expression with blending and synergy of different genres of arts that enrich body movement".

Formerly of Belgium's Les Ballets C. de la B., Jalet has composed a work that consists of a duo and two solo pieces. It begins with Venus in Furs, which was originally devised for the Luxembourg style event dysfashional in 2007, with costumes by Japanese designer Jun Takahashi. The designer behind the celebrated Under Cover brand, Takahashi is renowned for conceptually impressive fashion. The piece is performed here by Alexandra Gilbert. Venari, the second piece, is inspired by a Greek myth in which the hunter Actaeon accidentally sees the naked body of Zeus' daughter Artemis and is subsequently killed by his own dogs. Jalet himself performs the work, which sees him collaborate with costume designer Alexandra Mein. Jalet also takes to the stage for the final piece, Aleko, in which he performs alongside Gilbert. Aleko pays homage to Marc Chagall's 1942 backdrops for the ballet of the same name and is co-choreographed by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. Continuity in all three pieces is not only provided by Jalet, but also by the music by Christian Fennesz, a sometime collaborator of Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto and American industrial rockers Nine Inch Nails.

[DE] Im Mittelpunkt des Triptychon three spells steht der Mensch im Kampf mit seinem animalischen Selbst und seiner Sehnsucht nach Transzendenz. Damien Jalet und Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui haben dazu archetypische Vorstellungen, antike Mythen, Stoffe aus dem Balkan, Japan und Vietnam und zu drei sehr persönlichen surrealen Fantasien verarbeitet: So verkörpert Alexandra Gilbert in Venus in Furs ein Halbwesen, das wiederholt Metamorphosen durchläuft und am Ende sein tierisches Alter Ego abstreift. Jalet tanzt in Venari den Jäger Actaeon, der von der Göttin Artemis in einen Hirsch verwandelt wird und in Aleko tanzen beide zusammen die immerwährende Geschichte rasender Leidenschaft, die im Tod enden muss. Ein faszinierendes Spiel der Verwandlungen: wild und zivilisiert, großartig und verrückt. Begleitet werden die Stücke live von einem hypnotisierenden Soundtrack des Wiener Elektronik-Musikers Christian Fennesz.

[FR] Fruit de la collaboration entre Damien Jalet, Alexandra Gilbert, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui et le musicien Christian Fennesz, three spells se présente comme un triptyque de courtes pièces créées en différentes occasions et en plusieurs temps. Trois contes chorégraphiques dont les éléments narratifs se troublent subtilement dans une abstraction équivoque. Trois histoires brèves qui saisissent l'homme dans un tiraillement entre sa part animale et sa recherche d'une échappatoire spirituelle. three spells puise ses racines dans divers folklores (notamment des Balkans, du Japon et du Vietnam), mythes ancestraux (Actéon , Orphée,…) et autres archétypes, pour en extraire trois singuliers rituels aux ambiances surréalistes. Un jeu des métamorphoses fascinant, sauvage et civilisé, excellent et fou.
