[en] Following the international success of Sutra, which toured Europe in 2008 and 2009, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui returns to Luxembourg for the final part of his trilogy which began with Foi and Myth.

Throughout his trajectory as a choreographer, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui has been intrigued by man's search for the divine, by the notion and confusion of God in our minds. Co-choreographer Damien Jalet and he see Babel (words) as the next step in this exploration of the human desire for salvation, but also, in contrast to his recent pieces, a detour from the movement towards reconciliation or peace. Putting polyglot identity at the centre, the choreographers seek to identify the points of rupture, the lines of fissure, the build-up of factors to that instant of implosion, to test the extents to which plurality can be stretched. The focus now is words, which - in the same language - can mean different things to different people according to their interpretation; a minefield for potential conflict and hurt. With visual design helmed by sculptor Antony Gormley, the piece also represents a confluence between the thematic multiverse of Foi and Myth, and the stark, modular aesthetics of Zero Degrees and Sutra.

[fr] Depuis le début de sa carrière artistique, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui s'intéresse à la quête humaine du divin, au concept de Dieu et à la confusion qu'il sème dans notre esprit. Damien Jalet et lui considèrent Babel (words) comme l'étape suivante dans l'examen de l'aspiration humaine au salut, mais aussi - contrairement à ce qui était le cas pour les spectacles précédents - comme un écart dans la marche vers la paix et la réconciliation.
